Do I need a Tax Code on Pension?

I am now on a pension for the last 15 month and had an accountant dealing with my details until last year, and paid all taxes up to 2008. I do not see any point in paying an accountant for checking my pension (especially since I cannot claim accountant fees back), so I am dealing with it myself.
Should I have a tax code credit etc for 2009 as I have not paid any tax to date for this year? I know the state pension is not taxable, and possibly my 50% UK pension, I do also have a small private pension and note that this is not tax deducted either.

Would you be under the exemption limit of €20,000 pa for single person, €40,000 married ( assuming you are over 65)?
The state pension would be taxable if your income is over the limit.

I think I am under that, but I thought the exemption was worked out after the state pension limit
