Dishwasher only heating sporadically

Our Zanussi dishwasher only seems to have hot water in it every now and again meaning that most of the time the stuff is neither clean not dry when it comes out. What could it be seeing as how it is not a permanent problem?
 
intermittant fault with the element but that would be most unusuall.does it always finish the programme even when it does not heat?
 
You will need to get someone (qualified/knowledgeble) to look at it.
It could be any number of things, eg, water level sensor/thermostat/heating element/wiring/switchgear/controller PCB etc....
Or it could be as simple as a bad connection, intermittant faults quite often are.

programme always finishes. how much does a dishwasher repair person cost these days? I may get my rubber gloves and fairy out
 
It sounds as if the dishwasher is doing a "rinse and hold" cycle ie no heat called for Generally if the element fails the dishwasher will stop mid programme as the selected temperature never gets reached.so the timer never gets the impolse to move on
