Dishwasher not emptying

I noticed at xmas that the dishwasher was stopping mid-cycle but would get going again when the programme was re-started.

One day it stopped and I found water at the bottom which I eventually had to mop up (a little on the floor too) although now there is still water further down in the pipe that I couldn't empty entirely and which I'm sure will start smelling. (the house is unoccupied for long periods).

The machine is a few years old, not sure how many, I inherited it with the house in mid-2007, so at least 6 or 7.

Is it time to replace it?

There might be somthing blocking the filter. Has happened to me a few times usually a piece of a broken glass and it seems to stop it emptying completely and it could be well into the filter or the water outlet.

Sometimes the waste water pump sticks. If you get somebody to tilt the machine sideways you can look under and locate this. It has a small plastic fan which can be rotated by hand. It should rotate freely and usually a few hand turns will free it up.
