Disconnecting gas supply: "cap" or "disconnect"?

Quick question: I want to stop using gas for heating and cut my supply line so that I no longer have to pay standing charges. Is it sufficient to ask Gas Networks Ireland to "cap" the connection or do I have to fully "disconnect" (which AFAIK entails removal of the gas meter and seems significantly more expensive)? Any advice would be appreciated!

According to their code of practice:
Disconnection is either:
  1. Locking of the gas meter
  2. Physical removal of the meter; or
  3. Cutting and capping of the gas service pipe.
I expect that you'll need to contact your current/most recent supplier and/or Gas Networks Ireland to see how to handle this.

FWIW I have a property that has a prepay gas meter which was "deactivated" (I guess "locked" above) a few years ago, the supply pipe wasn't cut/capped, there is no gas supply to the house right now, the meter is still in place, and I don't think that it's racking up standing charges in the meantime. When I checked with GNI last year what would be involved in reconnecting/reactivating the supply they said that it would involve a site visit costing c. €160.

Thanks so it seems that locking the gas meter has the same effect as the more expensive & intrusive options (i.e. end standing charges).

I think so but I am not absolutely certain that if/when someone re-establishes the gas supply to my place they won't be hit with backdated standing charges. I don't think so but am not sure. And I'm selling the place anyway.
