My wife is having problems with her knees, she cannot walk far and has trouble climbing stairs, she is awaiting an appointment with an Orthopaedic Consultant. We are on a pension. Can she claim disability allowance and what does this include? How do we apply? Even a sticker for the car would help.

Have a look at www.welfare.ie and follow the links for "a person with a disability or illness" from the centre of the page. It will give you information on DA and how to apply.

As you do not state if you are on a full rate of pension it is difficult to answer your question as disability Allowance is a means tested payment.

If she is over age 65 she cannot apply (limited to people aged between 16 and 65)

I note that the Social Welfare site say up to 65, I have a friend who is 75 and disabled in a wheelchair, she receives a car allowance etc. with her husband as carer. I am not saying that my wife requires this but it is certainly a contradiction to what is being said.
