Dining sets - good places to buy?

Hi
I'm looking to replace my dining table.
What I'l like is a medium sized rectanglar table in a light coloured solid wood with 4/6 chairs, modern design.

I've trawled the net but havent gone out and about to look yet. I can't spend a fortune on it - just a nice simple plain table, maybe with high backed chairs, that'll fit in my room.

Looked in Argos catalogue but nothing appeals.

Anyone have any suggestions to where I could look please?

Thanks a mil!

What kind of price range have you got in mind?

Have you looked at Ikea? I got one of their tables as I wanted solid wood and couldn't find it at the right price in Dublin.

Last week, I was shopping around for similar furniture to next Dakota range. It was coffee table, tv unit and shelf thingy. Priced it in Tallaght - €1,100 plus delivery of €45.00 Beechmount in Navan €1,000 with no delivery charge.

I remembered here from ages ago that someone mentioned Forde Furniture in Kilcock, so tried there as last resort. Got the same three items for €780.00 and free delivery. Thats some saving. They had lots of tables and chairs for reasonable prices.

Anyone who has been there will know its a very unconventional "shop" to say the least. Its worth it even just to have a look at the "chaise longue", which has a hand written sign on it "shay lounge".

Around the €700 mark, I know its cheeky looking for solid wood at that price but bit strapped at the mo.

I've no transport to get to Ikea in Belfast - do you know if they deliver to the south and whether they charge some horrendous fee to do so?

I'm also looking at secondhand furniture websites - might be lucky, but it could take ages for my type of table to pop up. Should I take a look at the Buy & Sell? Tried eBay.ie (Ireland) but vey little of anything on it.

Thanks

I would definitely give Forde's a ring and they can tell you what they have. I am not looking for table and chairs so was not really paying notice when I was there on Sunday, but I vaguely remember a solid oak table and cant remember if it was four or six chairs for €799 I think.

Havent dealt with this outlet in NI, but their prices seem very reasonable for quality stock

These look very reasonable:

I was originally going to bring my furniture down from here in NI(he delivers to ROI, costs depend on weight I think), but then I remembered someone from here recommended Fordes, so phoned, asked do they do furniturelink, said yes, she gave me prices for the stuff over the phone, so then just went over to double check it was exact same stuff. They do all the stock from the Furniturelink catalogue,(you should have a look at their catalogue) and a lot more. the NI prices are good, but Forde's were the exact same and free delivery. Same stuff is in Fitzpatricks in Navan, Langans, etc so good quality. The way I am looking at it, the saving I made is probably the overheads the big fancy shops have.

Am a bit of an expert in Furniture shopping, usually I find the supplier, get a list of stockists and take it from there.

I think with a bit of shopping around you could get a decent enough set for €700.

Personally, not mad about IKEA, some of their stuff looks very cheap imo.

Well 700 a lot higher than my budget was

As per my other threads, I've become addicted to Ikea but their stuff isn't to everyone's taste.

If you drive, I'd say you could fit theh stuff in a car but you can check the dimensions of the packs online. If you don't drive and are based in Dublin, it's really easy to get there by train or bus (Bus Eireann even have bus service that drops you right to the door).

Breezemount (their delivery company) charges £100 for two pallets and £50 for each additional pallet. That's for Dublin but you can find info on delivery [broken link removed]. Since the stuff is flat packed you'd easily fit a table and chairs on one pallet I reckon. And if there's extra room I'm sure you'll find something to fill it

I actually like the suggestion of getting something secondhand - you'd probably get better value for money and Forde's sounds great, wish I'd known about it sooner!

You could try Diamond Living, they usually have a few dining sets close to that budget. Might have to wait a good few weeks for delivery though.
Just bought a 200 cm dining table there with 6 chairs, Oak for about 830.
Alternatively Woodies/homebase/B&Q ocassionally have half decent stuff.

Thanks everyone for all advice - on the trail now!
Had a look at Diamond Living. Their stuff's ok but I dont fancy waiting ages for delivery. Will try Forde's - even to see the place!

I sold my old dining set, sofa and armchairs and coffee table on donedeal.ie and gumtree.ie - you wont get big money but if its decent stuff you'll get a few bob to put towards the next lot. And you can negotiate on price if you're buying - some nice things come up there sometimes.

Better than hauling the old stuff to the dump or paying someone to take it away!

Try Meadows n Byrnes really nice quality furniture

Just thought I'd share the joy of a bargain...

Went into Bargaintown not really expecting much, never been before so thought it would be all cheap and nasty.

Lo and behold, saw a lovely solid oak table in light wood & 6 ladderback chairs (also solid) with chocolate brown faux seude seats - €399.

Talked to the guy - I only want 4 chairs, so we did a deal where I take the 4 display chairs and he knocks off €99 and the €19 delivery charge!

Whole lot €300 and its a lovely solid table with a bit of style!

Sold my old furniture on donedeal.ie so cost me nothing!!!

Will be delivereed Thursday - go Bargaintown, I wont be snobbish again!!

I am looking to buy a marble/travertine dining table to seat 10 people? Anyone know where you could get one here in Ireland or UK?

I got a lovely set in Bargaintown last January. Really solid wood table and four high backed chairs. €399 reduced to €350! I think you can get some really good bargains there from time to time. No connection.

Have you seen the one on donedeal at the moment, it is out of this world if you were into dinner parties and had big enough dining area and a spare 4,400. Oh to win the lotto

I saw a square 8 seater travertine table in The Park at Carrickmines, but I can't remember which furniture shop it was, either Jim Langan's or Classic Furniture. If memory serves me correctly there was a range of travertine furniture available so you might have some luck if you phone both places.

FLOMAN2008, it seats 12 people comfortable. has these chairs that you can recline in but the four legs stay on the floor. You know that feeling when you have ate too much and you just want to lean back

FLOMAN2008, posted 1 day ago on Donedeal in the furniture section, LARGE OAK KITCHEN TABLE, not my ad, i should be so lucky

oK thanks a mil, I shall check out both places.
Still had no luck on the travertine/marble table for 10 people, any suggestions anyone even in the Uk/Spain/Germany?

Its hard to find what I am looking for, I have been searching the internet for days...
