I am due to meet with Employer to negotiate my new work contract.....my current contract ends in sept and I am hoping to propose that I defer the start date of my new contract by 6 months therefore next april so in effect asking for a mini 'career break'

Is this an absolutely crazy idea to suggest or does it sometimes occur/happen elsewhere?

Thanks in advance!

I think he would immediately start hunting for a replacement and if that replacemnet could 'contract-in' for a year or more, then you'll find yourself without work.

It's not really for you to negotiate a new start date.. your employer wouldn't commit to this for one thing. The fact he's renewing your contract means he needs someone, so if he takes on someone else in the 6 months you're away he will probably continue to use the new person. Career breaks only really apply to people who are in a permanent job & will be entitled to return at the end of the break.

Thanks for the replies!

Yea, I suppose Im hoping they might be open to my suggestion but your posts make sense! I suppose the job needs to get done and if Im not there doing it, they will get someone else to do it!!

Its a fairly specialised role so I'd say they wouldn't be inclined to agree to my suggested arrangement. Oh well!!

be careful wha tyou wish for as I would say 100's lined up for your job even if specialist.
