Is it the landlords job to decorate the house?
When we moved in, the decore was in a bad state, and we re-decorated the whole house at our own expense

Usually landlord unless some sort of agreement between tenant and landlord.

Am surprised that you took place with bad decor and decorated it yourselves -surely something was agreed between you and LL ? e.g. LL said "you take this as it is and decorate it yourselves at your expence" or " decorate this and I'll deduct xyz from the rent".
Nothing said by LL or yourselves when you took the place ? Then I suspect it's at your expence, but i bow to wiser posters on this....

If the decor was in a bad state when you moved in..then you signed the lease on that basis.

If you chose to redecorate without consulting the landlord...personally I would be a VERY upset landlord.

However maybe...you have improved the place.
If so you should have done it with the landlord's agreement.
In these cases landlords often come to some agreement.

But for me...it would be a cold day in hell before I let a tenant paint my property .

I'd +1 oldnick's view.

If you redecorated at your own expense without discussing it with the landlord in advance I'd say the expense is yours alone.

Agree with other posters. If you chose to decorate the apt, without getting prior approval from the landlord on your decorating choices, or an agreement on who pays for what, this is all on you. A landlord expects to get his property back in the same condition as he gave it to you. He may be thrilled that he got his property decorated without having to do it himself & so thrilled with what you did that he'll offer to pay for some or all of it. But he also may be very, very ticked off at you doing this without his knowledge or consent. You may even lose your deposit if he chooses to claim that he needs to retain the money to undo whatever decorating that you did, to return it to its former state, such as painting brightly coloured walls back to basic white.

Have to say I agree with the other posters too. You knew what it was like when you moved in. You should have brought it up when signing the lease or consulted him first.
