Declaring loss on sale of shares.

I had a number of shares with EMC which were bought out by Dell in 2016 and for which I received a cheque, a number of DELL shares and VMWare. I made a loss due to this transaction. I still have the DELL and VMware shares. As I made a loss I did not declare anything to revenue. However I I plan on selling different shares this year where CGT will be due. Can I offset the loss on EMC shares even though the loss was not declared to revenue at the time? How to I work out the loss when I also acquired DELL and VMware shares.

Normally when shares are replaced by different shares following a takeover, there is no capital gain or loss recorded but the original cost of the shares in the company taken over is carried forward as the cost of the new shares.

Not sure what happens if there is a partial cash payment though...
