Decking question

I am looking at options for decking a 4 x 9 metre area in my back garden. A friend works in a suppliers and can get me a very reasonable price on Cedar(softwood) and Kapur(hardwood). I am told that hardwood is the way to go so was considering the Kapur. I have never knowingly seen it or heard of anyone who has used it. If anyone has experience with it, any thoughts would be helpful.
 
Never heard of Kapur, but afaik Cedar is good for 75 years.

I had cedar decking laid about 4 to 5 years ago bought it in Brooks Thomas. I'm very disappointed with it as some of the planks have long cracks and it also splintered quite easily - maybe we got a bad batch. We made the mistake of putting stain on to try and cover the cracks as I would rather the natural look -even the stain chips off after a while. We are now thinking of redecking over the whole lot and the only way I would go is composite decking - less maintenace and no splinters etc.

I also have deck in Cedar, put down about 5-6yrs ago. Very poor performance, treated every year (which is time consuming and pricey) and yet have many cracks in the planks and several are breaking up with rot. Company that put it down claimed decades of life in cedar, which is simply not true.
If you can a wood thats pressure treated in a decent colour, then I'd say thats the best. Most of the pressure treated stuff I've seen is awful green colour but maybe there are more options out there.

IMHO people are crazy to get any type of wooden deck in Ireland. The weather is useless and wood requires maintenance/painting, may crack or attract rats or . . if one must have a patio area then I think that concrete or slabs or flagstones is "the way to go".
 
I agree wood will not do the job in Ireland I saw a material"Fiberon" in the national garden center in Wicklow.It looks like it would be ideal,its a fiber based product that looks like wood.You can look it up just GOOGLE "FIBERON" I asked for someone to call and give me a qoute for 140M SQ That was a few weeks ago and no one has called to see the job so I can't say the service is great but the product looks good I am currently looking for an alternative supplier

What as is our case we want a small area approx 3m x 3m but raised approx 15-20cm to be levelish with a step?
Cost of patio raised to this level would I imagine be far more than decking? Would I be right in thinking that?
Also if a change of use or garden design was wanted then decking would be far more flexible option wouldn't it?

Yeah ideally Id like some sort stonework but as the area has to be raised about 2 foot and has 2 large shores it wouldnt work. Am considering some type of composite now as I want it to last. Seems quite pricey though. Thanks for all the replies.
