Damage to clothes

While I was at work today, my pants got ripped off the side of a desk which had a steel bracket running along it..

I normally wear this pants for work and now it has hole in my front thigh area of 10mm square...

Is there anything I can do at work to get it repaired or replaced?

Thanks in advance.

I'd point it out to who ever is the most appropriate person so they can fix the bracket. IF they mention covering the cost of the pants, all well & good. But I don't think I'd make an issue out of it otherwise. These things happen.

Are they new or part of a good suit? Loads of sales on at the moment, I'm sure you'll pick up a pair.

There are iron on repair patches you can get if you'd be happy with that - only cost a few quid

Sure, I got them in Debenhams for about €80, pants only about 3 months ago..

Out of principle I would like something done about it.

Yes, but out of what principle? Out of a principle that anything that happens at work is your bosses responsibility?

I can see both sides, including yours. It depends on the bracket.. if it was broken or damaged then you may be justified in asking for an allowance. However, if the desk just has a steel bracket and that's the way the desk is designed then I don't think you can ask for money.

If you stumble and fall down the stairs at work that's your own fault.. unless the stairs are dodgy in some way.. my point is that you are expected to use a certain amount of common sense to avoid damaging yourself.

Yes I agree about the common sense side of things, but the desk normally has a set of drawers attached to the side and none were at this desk, which meant the steel bracket is protruding with it's sharp edges/corners.

A photo would be useful, you should try to take one.

It seems like you have a point... if the desk is not complete and it is protruding into a walkspace then you could ask for money. You might look silly in front of your boss, or they might hold it against you.. or you may get a reputation as a tight wad etc etc... it's unfortunate as an 80 Euro pair of pants is quite expensive.. I think you'll have to take the hit to be honest.
