Cylinder Thermostat gone?

Mrs majee had the oil boiler on yesterday just to heat water for a bath for the kids. One of them flicked on the immersion switch too which she didn't know about. When we ran the bath the hot tap was spluttering vapour/steam (!) and eventually settled down after 5-6 mins to a steady flow of hot water. Does this suggest my cylinder thermostat is broken or just a consequence of both heating the clinder at the same time?

I'm no expert, but I have done a similar thing in the past, with no repercussions. It's possible that the water simply got too hot, what with two heating methods working at the same time.

To be sure your immersion is ok. Without the oil boiler running turn it on for say an hour. Feel the tank or turn on the tap, if the water is boiling get it looked at before someone gets hurt.

sounds like thermostat is gone. It would/should read temperture of water once it is powered regardless of the heat source. They cost about a tenner and are easy to replace.

From my experience the water will not heat at all from the electrical immersion if the thermostat is gone. So I think what should happen is if the water does not heat at all without the boiler on then your stat is gone. I would have though that there should be a further safety check from the oil boiler as well though.
