Customer Service experience

Hello all,
I am looking for advise on the above topic.
My story is that i am a 33 yr old man who has worked in the Bar/Restaurant business for the past 11 years.
I live in the south of Ireland but am moving to Dublin next month to be with my bride to be. I would love to get into the Customer Service role or similar but all vacant jobs that are advertised on line have a minimum of 6/9 months experience.
For example, one on line bookmaker had advertised for Customer service agents. I fitted the bill as i have good phone,e-mail,problem solving skills. I have great knowledge of all sports and am willing to put the hours in but they wanted some one with 1 yr minimum experience.
Where would i start to look to gain experience. I need a job when i go up there and now the pressure in mounting.....
All help would be greatful.

I would say that bar work needs a certain amount of customer service. Just use your previous role but focus on the customer service aspect (complaints, difficult customers, how you negotiated with them and calmed them down etc). I used to work in a bar and I'm sure you must have had a few difficult customers in your time. Just draw on these experiences and apply for the position.
I moved from bar work into customer services many moons ago. Again, when they asked about customer services I just drew on my bar work. Talking to the customers, complaints about food etc...

Perhaps go to a company who rite up CVs and explain what you need (a customer service geared CV) and they will be able to take the experience in your old job and pin point the customer service roles.

It might be best to drop your CV into a recruitment agent (loathe as I am to recommend them). They will have CS jobs on and if they can't get you one should be able to tell you what they are looking for.


Did you actually apply to this job? Or did they have one years experience in the advert? These things are not always set in stone, so if you can get into an interview and demonstrate you have the necessary qualities some requirements can be overlooked.

Have you got in touch with any recruitment agencies? Especially some of the ones which specialise in temping? They might be able to help you out and offer you some advice.

It sounds like you've plenty of valuable experience that will stand to you in your future career.

Are you sure it's what you want to do? I ask because I worked in Customer Service for a short while and it can be tough work and poorly paid (depends on the company I suppose). There might be other jobs out there that you're missing out on. I think it might be no harm to talk to a few recruitment agencies; they'll advise you on your CV and on what kind of jobs are out there that might suit you.

Or would you consider working in retail (not sure if you can apply for specific customer service roles or if you have to serve time in sales and then transfer). Then you could transfer out of retail to customer service in another company if you wanted.

Firstly, i dont think the bar trade will work for me in Dublin because my girlfriend works days as an accountant, so i need to work similiar hours.

Hi all,
I applied 2 days ago for a position as a customer service agent for a internet company, anyway i missed a call today from a guy saying that he had recieved my cv and wanted to have a chat to me to see wheather i would be suitable for an interview with them. He is calling me tomorrow afternoon for the chat...... i am shi**ing a brick as i have no idea what he will ask me. I have never applied for jobs this way.
Does anyone have an idea on what questions i will be asked ??

Relax - its only a call and if nothing else view it as experience for the next call!!! You have to take a philosophical approach to these things, youve never done it before, nows your chance to find out what its like!
He will probably ask about what kind of work you have done, experience levels, type of requirements he is looking for etc.
The best tip I can give you is to be ultra well mannered and as articulate as you can on the phone.
It will be ok, a phonecall is only a kind of 'touch base' before actually wanting to take a look at you in person.
