Current house painting costs

Hi,

Would anyone be able to give me an estimate in the current climate of what it would be to paint a 3200 house (base coat plus 2 coats), 21 doors, sand/varnish plus all carpentry varnished?

Original quote was for 16K last jan/feb 08 but alot has changed in this time..

that's a crazy price. we are going to do this work ourselves. totally wouldn't pay for this type of work, we have never hired a painter in the 20 years or so that we have renovated houses and i am not starting now.
 
I am paying €120 per day each to 2 lads who did 2 coats to all the ceilings and undercoated the rest of the house in 3 days. 3 days more should do the finished colours on the walls. Thats €1500 for 2000sq ft house. €16k is extortion.
 
I agree that 16K is extortion. I know varnishing takes a lot of time but that's way over the top. Did you not get quotes from more than one painter?
 
Just got a price for ours - 3,100sq ft.
Ceilings, Walls, Doors, Frames, Skirting, Window sils... €2,800 labour + €650 paint & materials.
 
He's starting on Monday and he'll be varnishing the doors & skirting. I've used him before and he's meticulous. He even took out my hoover the last time to clean up the small bit of dust from the filling/sanding.
 
Hi as a painter I can first of all tell that on new plaster I use a three coat system second of all on new woodwork it requires 3 coats one sealer/basecoat and 2 varnish and number three the price normally works out about 1.50 a sq foot (thats in the west of Ireland ) . I recomend making sure its done right this time as its almost impossible to get it right again . And remember use a good quality paint such as colortrend or dulux I wouldn't use anything less - remember you've put serious money into it already why use crap or cut corners now

I'm not a painter/decorator but it is a trade and I would imagine if its done by someone who knows what they are doing it'll be done (with all due respect) better than my goodself or a lot of us would be able. That said I would get 3 quotes and ask to see work
