Curious re tax situation.
I’m self-employed without a fixed income.
Typically I earn €3,000 per month and sometimes a little more.
In 2004 I spent four months abroad, my total earnings were 16,000.
I’m also in fulltime education.
As far as I know the firm I work for do everything above board, and everything ive earned is on their books.
Although I phoned the revenue and I was told that I’m liable to pay tax I isn’t convinced.
What do you guys reckon?
16,000 k per anum part time, am I liable?

It depends on what your Tax Credits, Standard Rate Cut off Point, and PRSI Class was. Were you on a PAYE basis?

Assuming the following:
SRCOP (single persion 2004) = €28000
Tax Credit (Single person, No PAYE credit 2004) = €1520
PRSI class, (self employed) = S

For 2004:
Income Tax = €1680.00
PRSI = €480.00

(Calculated using Payback Payroll Software www.payback.ie I'm affiliated with this company)

[broken link removed] might also be of use but assumes PAYE, Class A PRSI, some basic/standard tax credits and monthly payment (I think) only.
