Crazy Neighbours erecting Razor Wire

Hi there

I was on a few months ago about our Crazy Neighbours ("Crazy Neighbours are flooding our foundations"). Thanks for your advice at the time.

The County Council intervened in the end, and the flooding has stopped, and our extension is continuing (at last)! HOWEVER, last week they erected a c15 ft fence support structure on their side of the garden wall, and out over the top of the wall to kinda the half-way point and are stringing it with Razor Wire (it ONLY had barbed wire on it up to today).

It's really dangerous - it's really un-neighbourly (!) Can they get away with this? What should I do?

In the longer term I'm getting v anxious about moving back into the house beside them; we have 2 small children.

Are they 15 feet tall? How is it dangerous to you/them? I can understand how it may be unsightly. And possibly illegal - with or without planning permission.
 
A 'security fence' is not exempted development as per the regs.
A fence over 2.0 m high is not exempted either.

Contact your local authoritys planning enforcement section, describe the fence to them and ask for their view on the situation......

I'm presuming poster is worried should her kids inevitably climb the fence when they are able to

Any 'aromatic' smoke coming from their house ?

Oh my God talk about the neighbours from hell. I followed your other post about the foundations and am glad to hear that it has been sorted.
Contact the council again and seek their opinion surely this cannot be allowed.
My God - razor wire, i really feel for you.
 
As Sydthebeat said, because it is over 2m and because it is a "security fence" is is not exempt from planning. You can report it to the relevant planning dept. Have a read through thier website, it will make specific reference to what requires planning, and how to report breaches in the planning laws.

I followed the original thread with amazement, and feel for you, in that the matter isn't put to rest. Looks like you will have constant issues with these neighbours.

I wonder if their current gripe is that your extension is a potential route for burglers. Was this one of thier initial objections to the planning permission?

But on the plus side, if they are building a barrier to keep others out, at least it will keep them in. (Nutters!)
 
Hi Buddyboy - no, if anything, burglars would come into us from them, as they're a corner site.

Hadn't thought of it keeping them in though - that's a good one!

It sounds like confronting them would be a waste of time. They dont sound like reasonable people at all. I'd stick to the formal legal route. Especially if they were illegally flooding your foundations, this proves they're complete nut jobs.
 
Wow, those neighbours sound like a right bunch. Tell them to sign up to AAM, would love to hear the reasoning behind their actions!!

i can only imagine the stress it is causing! good luck and i hope you get some professional help.

I can't see many buyers in the current market, especially if the neighbouring gaff is protected by a "security fence". Bound to knock a good 10-20% off the value of your property.

Have you spoken to them?
I think it would be better to try to defuse the situation rather than escalate it. Most of the responses have been about "getting your back up", and though that makes good copy for us readers, following such advice is of little help to you.

Well, we gave up trying to talk to them ages ago - they wouldn't return phonecalls, they ran into the house if the saw us approach them to talk in the garden, and the last time I dropped mis-directed post in they sent us a registered letted telling us not to tresspass again.

So no, we haven't tried to 'reason' with them on this - we're actually out of the house at the moment while the extension is being built, so it's easier to 'ignore' at the moment.

I am concerned about when we move back though. Twice now I've called the local Garda station - once about the malicious flooding and once about the razor wire fence, and both times the Gardai pretty much told me they weren,t interested, no law was being broken and I should talk to the Council.

I can't believe their actions are legal, though.

We're reluctant to take a civil case, as we think it'd be a complete waste of time and money :
a) they're not sane
b) she's a solicitor (specialising in dispute resolution!!)
c) unless the Gardai tell us otherwise, it does not look like we have much of a case against them.

What do you think?
 
wow! a registered letter!!! that's mad!!!

personally if i was in your situation, i'd play hard ball...hmmm...how about getting a large guard dog that barks(very loudly) through the night...if they're breaking the council's planning rules, then break some rules of your own and annoy them back.

actually, and maybe its my sinister side, i think i would quite enjoy trying to annoy them as much as possible!!!
 

If you go down this road try thinking of the dog. These sort of nutters will probably try to kill the dog by poison or some other cruel nature.
