Covering to deter cats

I have a border, a narrow border, with plants either side of my garden. Could anyone recommend a covering I could put there that would deter cats walking in through there _ something sharp and pointy that they wouldn't like walking on

For the border or for the garden? Where are they depositing their droppings? If the borders are narrow, won't the cats simply jump over anything they find unpleasant on their feet?
