My mother has recently been offered a council house after many years of waiting. She is delighted, of course. However all her furniture is the property of her now ex-landlord. Does the dept of social welfare pay for furniture for her new house? Any advice greatly appreciated as she is concerned about having to sit on the floor!

I've never heard of them giving money towards or for furniture, but perhaps I am wrong.

i've heard that the community welfare officer gives some amount towards basic things.

she could also try larger charity shops and the free section of gumtree.ie and also freecycle.org jumbletown etc etc. There are often perfectly good pieces of furniture being given away on these sites.

Community Welfare Officer may, given the circumstances, make contributions towards Electrical Goods(Cooker, Fridge, Washing Machine) and also Carpets, etc. You have to submit written quotations.

As the above posters said, the person to contact is the Community Welfare Officer who covers the area where the new council house is located. A once-off payment may be made towards new accommodation costs, given the circumstances (moving from private rented accommodation where furniture was owned by landlord, financial situation, etc).

Hope your mother likes her new place!
