Cost of structural engineer etc

We want to knock down what is essentially the back wall of the house in order to open up a very dark back room into the kitchen extension. The wall is about 6m wide so we will need lots of steel (I'm told!!). I have a builder lined up but he says we need to get a structural engineer to design the steel.

Would anyone know:
a. How much should an engineer charge to design the steel needed?
b. The approx cost of the steel?
c. Whether the engineers check that it's all been done right?

Any information would be gratefully received!!

im not sure of costs, but price around...
you certainly need the engineers certification on it as a necessary part of teh engagement... so i would envisage about €1-€1.2k for professional fess

th eprice of teh steel could be about €200-300.. depending on spec

Thanks for that, Sydthebeat. It's good to have some sort of an idea of what to expect cos I'm trying to cost the job so I know approx how much I have to spend on a kitchen.
