Cost of landscaper?

Hi

Trying to get an idea of how much a landscaper/gardener would cost.

I have a fairly standard back garden of a terraced house. I havent actually measured it but very roughly 30 ft long x 20 ft wide. It currently has afew bushes/shrubs along the edges with grass in the middle and some paving outside the back door.

I am looking to get all the shrubs/bushes removed and new grass laid in this area to clean it up and a small few plants replanted but nothing major. Also want to get new paving as the stone is lifting and cracking at the minute.

Does anyone have any idea of roughly how much this would cost? I am expecting it to be quite epxensive but dont want to get a complete land if I get someone out to give me a quote!

Try the blanchardstown inst of ed who need work experience for their students....my parents got theirs done for 300 euro
 
When I studied horticulture our instructor said this was a common question. The reply, he said, was "as a rule of thumb, the price of landscaping a garden is the same as the price of a new kitchen".
To elaborate, generally speaking a small house has a small kitchen and has a small garden.
A large house has a large kitchen and has a large garden.

If you've an idea how much a new kitchen would cost (budget or top end) then that's an indication of how much your new garden will cost (budget or top end). As a rule of thumb.
 
A new kitchen would cost min. €6k, more likely €10k, not a chance a gardener would cost €6k for some clearance work and a small bit of paving!! Not any gardener I would be willing to pay anyway!
 
Thanks amtc, but I am in the west. Good idea though, might see if anything similar this side of the country.

Could do when you factor in materials..............just like a kitchen! I priced up a reasonable sized patio and the cost to put it in was roughly the same cost as the materials to do it!!
 
Factor in about €1000.

You can probably reuse the patio slabs. The base needs to be cleaner and levelled.

Grass needs to be sprayed off and then the garden rotavated.

Cost of new plants can be from pence to hundreds of euro, depending on your tastes and desires.

A good job can be done cheaply. Mind you, a bad job can be done too, so make sure you see some previous works from the patio man. There/snot much can go wrong with spraying, rotavating, removing old plants and setting new ones.

Not a chance it would cost €10k if you read what Im looking to have done.

Anyway I got quoted €1,350 which is still much higher than I exepcted as I am not wanting any expensive plants put back down and he said, as Ravima mentioned, he could re-use the patio slabs

Might have to just do some manual labour myself to get the place cleaned up!

Hi Meme80 - if you are willing to get your hands dirty, there wouldn't be (too) much to this. Bit of fresh air, some manual labour and huge satisfaction once job is done.

You could spray the grass now to kill it off. In a couple of weeks, grass will be dead, rake it out, hire a rotovator for the weekend to dig up the garden, rake it out & remove the bigger stones (you could add in top soil & fertiliser during the rotovating). Around end of April / May you could sow grass seed.

Regarding the bushes / plants - you could cut these back (once the frost eases) and put some shape on them square them off / cone shape, depending on the height of them. Remove some of them if needs be, but they roots if established on the bushes, would be tough & time consuming work.

You could then just get a price on laying of the patio slabs.

If too much work / effort - then you should get additional quotes - preferably from recommendations... personally, €1350 seems a bit high to me, especially as the price of plants vary so much & no details of such, I assume, were given in that quote. It's the clearing of the site & time taken for such if what would push up the price...more you can do yourself, the cheaper it should be.
 
Thanks Jazz, thats a great help. I dont mind too much getting my hands dirty and doing the heavy work but would just be afraid of not doing it right, not getting up all of the roots etc and for them to start regrowing afew months later! My knowledge of gardening is zero! But, at that price it is worth a shot doing it myself.
 

I probably should have said that in the end I just did it myself with a mate of mine who is fairly handy. But all the prices I got all seemed to be around the same level, give or take maybe 20 quid! I think it was about 800 quid for the patio and 800 labour. I was very surprised.

re gardening, part of the fun (for some) is the trial & error. Re the bushes / plants - once you get the root ball up itself & the main roots around that, it should be safe enough to stop them growing again. Again, if you can keep the plants / bushes in place, then all the better. Or even re-plant into sufficient sized pots if you want. You can use these on your patio slab area then.

Once thing I would say is to plan the layout of the garden, simple sketch of the garden as you want it. Straight / curved edges on grass, raised area for planting areas, what you are going to use for weed suppression in those plant areas etc. Where patio area is - just generally how you see the garden, it's contents & how you are going to use it. Have you a clothes line that needs to be put in, if so, need to have "step area" in the grass, if you've a compost bin / kids play area / dog area etc.. also, don't need to do all this straight away, get the basics in & expand over the seasons. Main thing, enjoy it Best of luck with it
 
I got a lovely garden plan done for €300. Unfortunately the cost of doing it was €8000, so I couldn't go ahead with it. I want to patio most of the garden (a small garden) and none of the patio people want to take it on - too small a job?
Am trying to find a labourer who knows about patios to put one in for me, but can't find anyone.

So if anyone knows of a 'hard landscaper' or patio installer let me know! Southside Dublin.
