Cost cutting - private health insurance

Long time reader of this site and in need of some advice. I've just been put on a 3 day week at work and my partner is out of work. We are looking at serious cost cutting right now. I'm just off the phone to NTL and have cut our tv package to the most basic they have. Next on my list is phone and broadband. Currently have a talktime package with Eircom and it usually costs around €80 per month. I'd like to take this down to around €50 for the month. Any ideas for cheaper providers?

My one main concern is my private medical insurance. I only took out the policy last month, they haven't even taken the first payment yet, and I was then hit with the 3 day week thing. The thing is, both myself and my partner have now been issued with medical cards so should I cancel the policy with AVIVA? Is it advisable to have private health cover anyway or is it a waste when I have a medical card? The policy is costing me €43 per month.

I am with perlico. I get unlimited anytime national and local calls to landlines, 30 mins to any mobile and broadband. All for €46 per month. I have already posted about private health insurance. Just don't think its worth the cost

Hi Vod - Check the Eircom website they have cheaper packages if you only use the phone at night.

Regarding your health insurance, it really depends on your age and your general health. The medical card will allow your free doctor's visits and hospital care, however, should you require an operation or need the care of a specialist consultant you may be in for a long wait. The medical card no longer covers dental care except in acute emergency cases. Check out Airtricity and Bord Gas for cheaper deals in electricity.

Ring NTL again - their phone offer has no rental charge, so that will probably save you another €25 per month.

Thanks for the replies.

Will definitely check out Perlico & Vodafone. Unfortunately, NTL broadband and phone aren't yet available in my area, I had asked them about it when downgrading our tv package. The talktime package with Eircom is the after hours one so we have free local calls at evenings and weekends. It's the mobile calls that cost the most. Himself is too chatty! I'm more of a free texter myself!

Have already switched to Bord Gais for electricity.

The thing with the medical insurance is, I'm already in the situation where I need an operation and am on a waiting list to see a consultant publicly. This is what prompted me to take out the insurance. I know it doesn't cover me for this but if anything like this were to happen again I would be covered. I'm thinking I might take my chances and cancel it for the few months (hopefully that's all it will be) that I'm on short time.

Have put my meagre PRSA payments on hold too. Getting hitched at the end of the year so life is on hold until then!
