Hi,
I have recently been successful with a an interview for a contract position. The recruitment agency has been on the phone and told me the job is there if I want but the contract rate is reduced as I might not have the full experience for the job. How do I know that the recruiter is just saying this so he gets a better rate for himself?

I have not signed the contract yet.

The short answer is, you don't know for sure.
Only the agency knows both the Charge Out rate (COR) - charged to employer and the Charge In Rate (CIR) - paid to you is.
(Unless the agency have an 'Open Book' policy with the employer i.e. when the employer knows the margin the agency is making off the contractors)
Is it a big drop in original rate offered?

Why do you care what the recruitment agency is making, are you happy to take the position and possibly feel that you are a little under qualified?

Serenn thanks for your answer. Jack the thing is, I feel I am qualified and I think that
the recruiter sees a possibility to make some extra money. The recruiter has said that the interviewer thought I had not enough experience in the area. Could the recruiter be lying?? Should I question the recruiter.

i would agree, go with your Gut feeling... Maybe call their bluff and say you aint taking lower rate only 1st one..

Well if you are qualified dont take the lower rate, let the recruitment agency take the hit and say it is not your fault that their cleint is being tight.

If the interviewer felt you weren't experienced enough for the role, why were you offered it at all?
In this employer's market, there are probably plenty of other candidates with the requisite experience to whom they could offer the role. That just seems a strange thing to be told.
Just my opinion, bit difficult to tell without further information.

Bottom line is you are thinking of accepting a position which they feel you are already "under qualified" for...why on earth are they offering the role to you if this is the case? If it were me (and this is not being tight in any way) I would speak to the recruiter and tell them your feelings on the matter. If you are qualified then stick to your ground about it - you know your worth.
