I signed a contract about a month ago to work for a small division of large US corporation. I'm supposed to begin on the 14th.

It was announced on Wednesday that the division I would be working for is being sold by the parent company. I'm worried about the future of my job and in addition to that I just recieved a call about interviewing for another job that would be a huge step up from the original one.

If I find out I got the second job before the 14th, can I break the original conract?

Just so I'm clear - you don't want them to be able to break the contract, but you want to be able to break the contract?

I don't understand where I said anything close to that.

If the contract is as an employee then yes you can. If the contract is as a contractor then check the terms and conditions.
