Contract of Employment - is it legal or worthless?

Hi folks
If you received a contract of employment that details your salary in euros but other parts of the contract refer to UK bodies (such as the DSS and the HSE - Health & Safety Executive over there) there is no private pension scheme and refers to being “contracted into” SERPS (State Earnings Related Pension Scheme) and absence due to sickness is also referred to using the UK terms, ie, SSP.

Does this “mixture” of detail in the contract still make it “legal” or is it worthless?
Anybody have any thoughts?

Worthless and absolutely pointless, IMHO. It would concern me that a prospective employer (Irish ?) would present such a document.

Irish registered sister company of a UK company (if that makes any sense)

Sounds like MBNA credit card's 'terms and conditions' when the first started up here. I was supprised that such a large company such a mistake

Indeed - it is laziness of the highest order and, in my opinion, reveals the level of contempt they have for their staff - I would not want to work there.

I believe that they have to provide you with a proper contract with a certain number of days of you starting or they are breaking the law

I work for a US company but my reporting line is into the UK and my HR support is also provided from the UK. it scares me when I see the sheer level of ignorence that exists to us over there. I have spent hours at a time explaining Irish history, that the queen is there queen, not ours and that just because something happens on "the mainland" does not mean it applies over here. This is especially the case for HR and even more so where things like contracts are issued by "shared service" type structures who can be based(in my case) out of India.,

You probably just need to educate them and indeed it can be quite entertaining watching them make complete and utter eejits of themselves.

Just out of sheer curiosity, what would the position be if said contract "had" been signed (and it hasn't been - just a thought) and sent back and a start date agreed etc...... would the employee be tied to it or would it be void?

The task of creating the contract was given to someone in HR... surprise, surprise they took the lazy option!
