Contract employment question

Good evening.

I am looking for advice in employment field.

My partner is in the contract employment (IT) and had some 5 months left on his contract when he was approached by another MNC with a good offer. My partner negotiated the contract for about 6 weeks to be sure that everything was covered in it. He got a signed copy of a contract by mail, signed and returned it via registered mail.
He gave a month termination notice to his current employer that was accepted. When there were just 3 days left on the termination notice period he was approached by a recruiter from a new employer side stating that they decided that don't need him as their project will be postponed for another 6-12 months. That they can take him for 3 months as compensation (contract was for 12 months) but not longer.
My partner managed to reverse his termination and stayed in his employment .. luckily.
We are wondering though is it legal to step out of the contract that way?

Thank you.

I appreciate moderator's moving the topic to another subforum but as I'm seeking a legal advice on this, can I ask to move topic back to Askaboutlaw forum?
I hope to get some responses. Or might be this is the wrong forum to ask such questions?

Thank you.
