I know there are other threads on rent allowance but I'm a bit confused about how it works and what rent limit there is etc

I'm a single mum from Drogheda with one child aged 4.
Ive lived within the parental home since i had my daughter.
I now have to move out because my daughter is getting older and starting school next sept and i can no longer share a bedroom with my sister as she is expecting her first child so one of us had to move out and i felt it was only fair i move out as its her first child and she needs the support more than I.
I am currently recieving one parent family payment of approximately 210 a week and getting maintence of 200 a month.
Ive been told that there is a restriction on how much rent a lone parent can pay i was wondering if anyone knew how much and what amount i would have to pay every week i have a deposit and first months rent of 1,500 at the moment but im afraid to put a deposit down in case they say i have to find somewhere else.

I know the allowance for a couple with child is 1000 euro, it could be the same for lone parent.

In some instances it seems that the Community Welfare Officers want you to get a property for the exact amount, which is possible depending on where you live.

Some officers will allow you to get a property over the allowance if you can make up the difference yourself.

My advice is to ask in your local Social Welfare office where to go for advice and call in and chat to them face to face.

Good luck!

The Maximum Rent limit varies from County to County - for Co Louth, the maximum rent limit for one (or 2) adults with one child is €160 per week. If you rent a property with rent greater than this amount, you won't get Rent Supplement at all.

Your maintenance will be part-assessed when calculating how much rent supplement you may be entitled to.

Maintenance is assessed as follows for Rent Supplement:
The first €95.23 is assessed in full.
The next €75 isn't counted
Anything over that amount (€170.23) is assessed at 25%.

So your maintenance of €200 is assessed as -
95.23 + (25% of 29.77) = 102.67 weekly means.

If you rented a property at €160 per week, you would have to pay 102.67 + 18 (minimum contribution everyone on rent supplement has to pay) of the rent yourself, so you would receive rent supplement of approx €40 per week.
