compost bins

My compost bin is about quarter full but there are a lot of creepy crawlies ie wood lice etc in it.
Is this part of the break down process and if not can something be done to prevent it

Why do you want to prevent it? That's a good sign! They are indeed all part and parcel of the decomposition process and cause no problems otherwise. Make sure to turn your compost bin contents (e.g. with a garden fork) from time to time to assist with the process. It also helps to pour urine into it periodically believe it or not.
