hi my daughter is currently completing a masters in human resource management and industrial relations which will finish in August. She has applied for many grad programmes with no luck. Her only work experience is as a waitress and as a class room assistant during her college years. She did her degree in commerce and has no practical office experience can any one give tips on where she should be looking for jobs and what avenue she should take. thanks in advance
I was in same position 2 years ago. Straight out of college and basically it was case of no experience - no job. Does the course include work experience? if not,I would suggest she concentrates on small firms and close to where she lives if possible. It always helps to have an address that is recognised by the company.
I approached firms looking for work experience (Its highly unlikely that they won't pay her) in my home town and gradually moved to administrator and again to marketing co ordinator.
If she does get work experience and it doesn't go any further - at least she now has office experience and will find it much easier to find better job.
Very best of luck
There was no work exp with the course and during the summer she would have done waitressing and a classroom asistant for 10 weeks. She does not seem to be getting any replies to her cv not to mind getting interviews, I feel it is the lack of office work exp that is going against her
She should get someone to take an objective look at the cv first. Maybe her lingo and grammar structure may not be up to scratch for a masters holder. Then, she should target companies like Lidl, Aldi or something retail for a lower or mid management role (ie, as a store manager) inline with what she had done in the past. Or, target the multinational companies. They are always looking for fresh graduates to recruit and train.
