I am currently doing a clean up in my house and there is a particularly dirty area over my living room fireplace where the paint has become discoloured from the soot, smoke etc. coming from the fireplace. Some years ago I got advice (I think from here) on some solution which removes these stains but unfortunately I cannot remember the name of it
Suggestions??

Carpenter, is "sugar soap" a type of soap or do I just throw a dose of sugar into some liquid soap?? Excuse ignorance!!!

That's ok Mickeyg! Sugar soap is actually a granular, crystal like cleaning chemical which looks like sugar. It's used by painters to clean down woodwork and walls before repainting. You should be able to get it in any Paint/ Hardware shop. "Mangers" is one brand and costs about €3 for a small tub. Failing that you can also use washing sida which will do a similar job, buy it in the supermarket for less than €2 a bag
