Claiming Tax relief for AVC pension and Medical Insurance payments

Hi,
I am in the process of filling in my 11S Pay and File Income tax return 2012.
(I am in full time PAYE work, and have a rental income)

I just wondered, do i need to declare AVC's made to my work pension scheme? Is it in my benefit to do so? I am thinking it probably is, but am unsure.

My AVC comes out of my paypacket before tax, but i don't want to end up getting taxed on it when they process my tax return.

Standard AVCs are treated like a pension contribution and you get relief at source (i.e. your employer gives you tax relief) so there should not normally be a requirement to include your AVC contributions on your tax return.

You can tell if you have got tax relief on them already by looking at your final payslip for 2012 and if your cumulative to date for PAYE is lower than your cumulative pay to date for USC purposes then the difference (I'm guessing) should include your pension and USC contributions. If the amounts are the same (approximately) then you may not have got relief through your payroll and the Form 11 is the way to claim it.
 
That's great, thank you. I've checked my Dec 2012 payslip, and yep i've already been given tax relief for my pension and my AVC contributions.

However, whilst looking at my payslip i saw that i have medical insurance payments (BIK) that are taxed. I think i can claim tax relief on these?
 
You should have already being taxed on your BIK for medical insurance payments. The only adjustment is the tax credit on the VhI premium should be due to you. If this isn't included in your tax credit certificate then you should claim it by either filing a tax return or maybe through PAYE anytime.

Thanks, yep i am being taxed on it. So, i will add it as a tax credit on my tax return (11S). I am trying to ensure i'm claiming all the tax credits that i'm due, as in previous years i haven't been claiming enough.
