Hi there,

I've usually claimed on Revenue.ie for my health expenses, I have completed from 2008 through previous years.

Im now looking to claim for 2009 and this was the first year Ive had health insurance.

My claim details are as follows :
Cost of Heath Insurance : €873.69
Difference between Health Expenses and what was covered by my Health Insurance : €581.50 (i.e if GP visit was €50 then Health Insurance refunded €20 so the difference was €30)

My question is do I add these together and make this my claim for 2009? Or what do I do?

I dont want to end up overclaiming and then owing money.

Also can I combine health expenses for my daughter with my own?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Laura

The cost of your Health Insurance is now been taxed at source , so therefore you cannot claim this amount of € 873.69.

Sums received from a policy of insurance must be deducted for tax purposes ( on Med 1 form )

It looks like your medical expenses claim is going to be for the sum of € 581.50 ( where relief is now 20 % )

Thanks for your quick reply.

Do I just fill in the revenue.ie claim part as normal so and just add the 581.50 as the health expenses for 2009.

Does it matter that my health insurance runs from Mar 2009- Feb 2010, or can I only claim from Mar 2009 to Dec 2009.

Thanks,
Laura

You can fill in Form Med 1 where there is a breakdown of the medical expenses

The tax year now runs from 1st January to 31st december , so this is the term that you use to claim . - The fact that your health insurance runs for a different duration does not matter

Tax relief on the payment of health insurance is completely different to tax relief on health expenses, so dont mix them at all. The valid year for paying your health insurance is also irrelevant

There is a keypost which you should read on tax relief on health expenses, which explains how to claim where you claimed some of the cost from a health insurer.

You will fill in the total costs and the amount reclaimed.

To answer your question, you claim tax relief for any health expenses which you paid for, doesn't matter who it was for.
