Claiming money from tenants who have left

Since our tenants have left (6 weeks ago)and we paid a full deposit back we have discovered fleas and have had to get the place treated, clean clothes of new tenants and we have offered one months rent as compensation. We want to claim this back from the old tenants who had a dog in breach of the tenancy agreement who we asked to be kept outside when we found out. Can this be done and what is best way to do it?

You may find it very difficult now to prove the previous tenants caused a flea infestation. Naturally if you are satisfied they are responsible you should ask them to pay but I wouldn't spend too much money on legal costs trying to pursue them if they claim they were not the cause.
