Claiming Expenses

Hi, I am set up as a ltd company and I wanted to know if I can claim expenses like rent, light, phone and heat. And if so what percentage can I get back when I am doing vat returns.

Thanks in advance.

Do you rent an office or work from home?

If working from home, then you can claim the percentage of electricity that applies to your business. Maybe 20% would be acceptable? You can probably do the same for rent, although that may have implications for your landlord as the property is considered part commercial and he could be liable for rates. I don't write off any of my mortgage for this reason.

Do remember that if you are set up as a limited company then you can only claim VAT on the invoices which are made out TO the company.

Any expenses such as Light/heat/phone etc, are allowable in full once wholly and exclusively for the purposes of the business. If the company pays for the expense and there is any "personal" element for the directors in it then that is taxable as remuneration.

Your accountant/auditor will be able to advice you on the specifics.
