Civil status updated to "married"on My account

Hello,

My husband had updated his civil status to "married" on the "My account" page in Jan 2020, however they sent me a request to upload the marriage certificate , which I only saw now, that is 6 months later . I have uploaded it today. Now, will he get the refund for excess tax paid so far retrospectively? (since for married persons there is a reduction in tax) . Also, from the next pay cycle will he be getting pay as per the revised married status or will he still be taxed as a single individual? Just to mention, I am not employed .

If you have stated in your Revenue accounts that you want to be jointly assessed and you got married in Jan then you will both be assessed separately for 2020 I believe and then jointly from 2021. If you got married last year or before and want to be jointly assessed they will reassess from the year you got married. You will need to decide how the credits will be divided going forward so keep an eye out for emails from Revenue notifying you of communications and documents.

Thanks, we got married last year, but updated the details in Jan 2020. However due to the delay in uploading of marriage certificate ( which i did today), his civil status is still single in revenue account and he has been taxed as a single individual. From when would he be getting the benefit of married person ? Can we claim refund ?

If you have opted to be jointly assessed and you are not in receipt of taxable income this year, then your transferrable credits and rate band should be transferred to him. Depending on his taxable income so far this year, he may be entitled to refund for 2020 via his payroll if he's still employed.
