Hi,

posting for a friend,

Does anybody know if it is possible to take a career break from the Civil Service and join the gardai?

he has already been in contact with his personnal section who could not answer his question.

His terms of employment state that he is entitled to a career break for study, to care for someone, to travel and may not "take up new employment" during this time. He is allowed to become self-employed though.

As the process of joining Gardai includes a term of training and study and exams and is not paid a wage but given an allowance, is it possible to take a career break from CS and join the Gardai and then leave CS if successful with the training down in Templemore.

Cheers

I would say this is on order.

If he joined the Civil Servcie before 1995 it would be recomended as then he would not be considered a new entrant and continue paying his modified rate of PRSI.

I would be very interested knowing the answer to your question. My friend (civil servant) was thinking of applying for a job of Special Needs Assistant in a primary school and was looking into the possibility of taking a career break from the civil service. She cant get a definite answer anywhere.

"there is no provision in the career break scheme which would permit a staff member on career break to take up alternative employment within the State."

A quote from a memo found on Dept of Finance website (dated 2002 but seems to be still applicable).

But there is provision for self employment as OP mentioned:

There are separate provisions for special leave for genuine self-employment or for starting up a new business with genuine employment potential.

This person is not taking up alternative employment though, they will not be paid a wage at all. They are training and studying in the hope of taking up alternative employment in the future and given an allowance for this...

Its not very clear is it?

i have heard that if you are training to be a guard then you cant have any other jobs, not even a part time or weekend job. although you would be on a career break and wouldnt be working you would still technically have a job!!!!!

the reason i know this is because my boyfriend is in the process of becoming a guard on he read it on boards.ie there is a big thread on there that might be of more help to you
