Hi, our house was built in 2003, as part of a large estate - we have a chimney breast suitable for class 2 gas fire.`
The chimney breast takes some space in the downstairs living room, and we have never had a gas inset put in.
Where the chimney breast really bothers me, is in the upstairs bedroom, where it comes out about 10 cm in depth, by 50 cm width.
The bedroom is already quite small, and I hate having this thing in the middle of one wall.
On the roof, we dont have a chimney stack, but a sort of small metal pipe coming out.
Our house is end of terrace, so the chimney breast sits on the external wall, which is load bearing I presume.
I have read other posts warning of how big a job it is to get a chimney breast removed - does anyone know if this would apply to my case as well? would I also need to get a structural engineer etc.?
I was thinking of having the thing removed from the upstairs bedroom only, and eventually install a flueless gas fire in the living room, or else get the whole thing removed, as in fairness we would never be using the gas fire, given that we have central heating.
I regret not requesting this to the builders at the time the house was being built...
Another thing, there are some houses in the older part of the estate, which are absolutely identical to ours - except, the upstairs bedroom does not have this thing coming out of the wall - I have no idea how they managed.
thanks for any suggestion!
