This seems to be causing awful confusion online, even some newspaper sources and other financial people referring to it as Child Benefit increase but my understanding is this is the extra payment for someone on social welfare and not what we would call the Children's Allowance payment?

Child Benefit = universal monthly welfare payment (the only monthly payment).

It has fallen in both nominal and real terms over the last decade.

Currently at 140 per month per child.

Previous names: Child Dependent Addition / Increase for a Qualified Child (IQC)

Now called Child Support Payment

2025 rates are

Child under 12 years = €50 per week
Child aged 12 and over = €62 per week

They are dreadful for this. I’ve seen DSP refer to the same concept with three different terms in the same letter.

This is the US term for what we would call child maintenance. Very easy to be confused.
