My parents have a holiday home and there is a landline (Eircom) in the house that currently costs c€50 per 2 months. The house sits empty for much of the time and the only ones using the house over the autumn/winter would be us young 'uns and we all have mobile phones so we could do nicely without the landline. My parents go for most of the summer and my mam couldn't do without the phone then because all her cousins etc would be ringing her all the time while she's there (it's her home place). They wouldn't get a mobile phone at this stage of their lives (even now when you let my mam know you're ringing her from a mobile phone, she nearly hangs up on you in fear of what it might be costing you, so no fear she'd ever use a mobile to actually have a conversation with anyone!!!)
My question is this: is there a cheaper way of having a landline in the house when it's really only needed for about 4 months of the year?
