Hi All,

Hoping that this thread will not clash with no discussion on the medical issues posting guidelines as I am just looking to find out about charges for visits.

Just wondering if anyone else has seen their ophthalmologists of late and if so what were they charged?

I had my first visit last year and it was the standard €250 first visit charge even though it included the usual type of eye tests that I would have when I get new glasses with the optician.

Cue my next visit and it was €150 plus €60 x 2 for tests so €270. The secretary said that this was the way they were billing now! Are they being too smart or is this standard pricing for ophthalmologists now?
 
That's common enough, depends on the tests you had done. Photographs and scans of the back of the eye would cost extra, as would glaucoma field tests. What were the 2 x €60 tests?
 
€200-250 for an initial consultation with any specialist consultant isn't unusual these days. If you have private health insurance it may cover some of this cost. Any unreimbursed medical expenses are eligible for tax relief.

As it was a few months ago I think one of them was the puff of air to the back of the eye or non-contact tonometry test. The second may have been either images taken of the back of the eye or possibly the green and red circles and comparing those.

The thing that I find annoying is that I paid €250 only for the first visit and this included the same previous tests. The second visit that I was expecting to be around €150/€180 was actually €270. €150 for the visit and €120 for the two tests. I'm just wondering if this is something new that they are now charging for the tests whereas they were originally included in the visit cost.

Thanks for that. Yes I have a few consultants to visit at present and they were all €250 for the first visit. One was €180 for the 2nd visit, the other was €150 and the ophthalmologist was €270 = €150 + €60 x 2.

I have claimed on my health insurance and received tax relief for all.
 
Doesn't one of the high street opticians do these tests for €30? I am entitled to a free eye test every two years that used to include the puff to the eyeball. I think last time when I went for the free test I got the additional back of the eye image test for €30.

The tests can also be covered by one's PRSI every two years. As far as I can recall I paid approx. €20 extra for an .
