My son is heading to Santa Ponza next week and will have a standard AIB card with him. He says there is a €4.50 minimum charge to withdraw cash. When I go to France and make cash withdrawals there is no charge.
Why is it different in Spain ?

Depends on who operates the ATMs and whether they have agreements with your bank. ATM charges seem more prevalent in Spain, but branches of the larger banks may not charge.

Rang AIB and they said no charge on a student to withdraw. Thanks Leo. Avoid supermarket ATM's I would think.

There are charges in a lot of Bank ATMs now in Spain apparently. See this previous thread. Most warn when taking money so it pays to shop around and find a local bank which may not.
