I have recently been offered a promotion with my current employer and this requires me to agree a new contract of employment. My existing contract includes the benefit of paid maternity leave (company tops-up the state benefit) however due to changes in company policy, this benefit is no longer offered in new contracts. The loss of this benefit is quite significant given the current right to 6 months leave and the fact that I hope to start a family ithe near future. I am hoping that I can be compensated for the loss of this benefit in some way e.g. by way of salary increase? Note: The employer is offering me a measly €2000 increase for the promotion (but this barely covers the longer working hours that come with the position) Can anyone offer some advice ....I'm not sure if it is worth my while accepting the new job but don't want to ruin career prospects?
I'm not sure that this is legal but some of the other posters here who are more up to speed on HR stuff would confirm better than I.
My basic understanding is that if you are in a permanent contract and you are offered a promotion, it's still covered under the permanent contract. I've never had to sign a new contract and/or lose pay conditions etc for a promotion!
hi mo3art..thanks for that...it's a bit tricky 'cos when i signed my original permanent contract, the company was under different ownership. The company that bought out my original company does not offer the same standard perks. Ive always had to sign new contracts for previous job changes however this is the first time under the new ownership and also the first time where the standard terms and conditions have changed so dramatically...
In my experience its quite common for some positions to have benefits like paid maternity while other positions don't. Seem like you are losing a lot in this so called promotion. Where I am lower grades have flexitime, whereas higher grades don't. You'd have to take all pros and cons into account, including your future plans in the company before making a decision.
