Has anybody any experience of changing a name by deed-poll?

When I registered my sons birth last year - I gave him a double-barrelled surname.

I regret this now and wonder how difficult it would be to drop the second part of the surname...

What implications would this have in the future for his education, passport applications, revenue/social welfare etc....?

Whats the first step in goiing about this?

would appreciate any feedback

Contact the High Court office in the Four Courts- they will talk you through it. Or your local solicitor will be able to draft up the necessary affadavits and have it dealt with in Court on your behalf ( through law agents) for a modest fee.

thank you

do i need to involve his father - can he object? (we're not married)

hi,
try this web site and search for deed poll
www.citizensinformation.ie

On the fathers permission, I think because you are not married you may not need it, You can check this out on the above website.

Hope that's of help and not more confusing!!

Just so you are aware of all the options you don't necessarily have to go the Deed Poll route. 'Common usage' allows you to call yourself anything you like and there are straightforward procedures to have that name used also by all relevant parties.

Treoir is an organisation that specialises in this and many other issues affecting unmarried parents and their children. See the website at http://www.treoir.ie/ for contact details.
