Change in working hours question (an odd one)

Hi,

New guy here, not long in the world of work.

Currently working an office job from 9 - 17:30 Mon - Fri, enjoying what I do. However, there is recent talk from management regarding a possible change in working hours.

The idea is to "take" an hour out of the current working day (e.g.. the working hours during the day would be from 9 - 16:30 as opposed to 9 - 17:30) and have the employee work that hour at some point during late evening/early night of that same day (20:00 - 21:00 or 21:00 - 22:00). This is from home, though potentially could be in the office instead.

My terms of employment allow for us to be required to work extra hours to facilitate working internationally, but if this split in the day turns my job into shift work I'm not sure how this works. I guess I don't have much comeback.

My questions are:

- What legislation provides for the working day to be split up in this way?

- Would this be considered shift work?

- If I didn't agree to any potential changes in terms of employment arising due to this change could I potentially lose my job?

- Would I be entitled to any extra remuneration for working the unsocialable hour?

- What would my entitlements be for working from home (i.e. could it be asked that I use my personal computer for business purposes, would they have to provide for light, heat and power to power the computer I would be using, any issurance issues)?

Please note that this hasn't been decided fully by management yet, and hasn't been said that this will be for all employees or an opt-in kind of thing, I just want to get a good grounding so I know what my entitlements are. I do genuinely enjoy my job and put a lot of effort in to my day so would hate to see it go down the tubes but I can't commit to working in the night time.

I apologise if I've missed anything in the legislation I've read, or am getting mixed up with something. Nothing I've seen seems to cover this kind of specific scenario. Any advice anyone could give on my rights here (or lack thereof) or any useful links would be much appreciated.

Thank you!
