I've got gas central heating but over the last few days something very odd has been happening to it.
GAS central heating system was re-vampted only a year ago .My setup is a new Ideal Classic Boiler, a new Horstmann H27XL 2 Channel Programmer for hot water and seperate heating and an older wall thermostat which activates at 21 degrees.

Situation is this: boiler is not firing up for heating when it should be doing so on it's programme , even if the boost button is in addition , activated. Howerver if I push the boost button for hot water in desperation , it activates the boiler and I get hot water and as the heating programme is also running but this doesn't happen every time.

Room Thermostat appears to be clicking on and off so I must presume it is working but have no idea what is going on, can anyone throw any light on what the problem is ?

it sounds like you motorized valve has gone faulty (in ur hotpress most likely) and it will need to be replaced
Where r u located?

If your motorised valved has failed, it will shut down. It can be opened manually so it will be heating on as long as boiler is fired. This is a temporary measure so you don't frezze waiting for it to be replaced.

The valve could be in your hotpress or under boiler. It is a valve with a box on it. A cable comes off the box. Run your fingers around bottom edge of box and you should feel a lever, push the lever and you will hear the valve open, it makes a whirling sound. Once it is pushed over as far as it can you need to slightly lift lever and place in groove. This holds the valve open, if you don't get the lever in the groove it will automatically shut.

Thanks DavyJones,

Can I check does this operation need to be done whilst the boiler itself is firing or when is the optimun time to do it? Yes , I can see the valve you are talking about and the side lever is sitting proud of it and it's facing me, ( it's set under auto) . I can easily get a new one in Davies tomorrow then comes the problem of getting it fitted. I presume, I'll be needing a good plumber to fit it ? How long would it take to replace once I have the replacement to hand?

if you turn heating on you should hear valve open. With heating on, see if you can manually open valve, if you can (it should already be open) then you know thats the problem.

Changing valve is easy, you don't actually change valve as such. the motorised box pops off valve body and new one pops on. then new one needs to be wired exactly like old one.

Just tried to turn the heating on via the boost button and didn't hear a sound coming from the valve or the boiler ( the latter is definately silent and not firing up at all)!

if wired correctly (most are not) the motorized valve not only shuts on and if the pipework to ur rads when the thermostat calls for heat. It also has a microswitch that signals/sends power to ur boiler to fire. So as Davy suggested once the valve is locked into the flushing position it should also activate the microswitch firing the boiler but this can also go faulty and cause the boiler not to fire.
Return if u do need someone in ur area to call out just mail me. But as Davy suggested if u are comfortable with that kind of work it's a pretty easy fix to do urself

Thanks DGOBS and DavyJones.

Boiler activated this am and I nipped down and activated the switch as you suggested and bingo it worked!!! It was lovely to come home to a warm house today instead of an icicle . I'll get to Davies tomorrow and get a replacement for this one and fingers crossed, it won't prove too hard for me to replace . Many thanks for all your helps.
