What’s more economical / efficient:

Leaving the heating on for 3 - 4 hours continually
Having it come on for 30 mins and off for 30 mins for 3 – 4 hours

Thanks,

I would say option 1.

once the water reaches temperture predetermined by the stat the boiler shuts down and will turn on once temp falls under this limit. The cycles would be quite short.

maybe an hour at a time that way the rads are still warm when the heating kicks back in and its not heating from cold

im finding even with the thermostat in the boiler at ist lowest setting the rooms are getting too hot (some have 2 rads). Any other way to control the heat at the rad (just the bog standard type)?

As regards turning it on for a half hour, then off again for a half hour for 4 hours, why would you do that ? After the first half an hour, your room might be still cold, and you'd have to wait a half hour for it to come on again.

Best is to set the thermostat at the desired temperature, and let the system come on and off when it wants. If it reaches its desired temp after a half hour (or after 20 minutes, the system will turn itself off).

But in answer to your question, its cheaper to turn on-off-on-off for half hour periods than having it on continuously, but you might be cold.

You get what you pay for.

Thats the issue, the thermostat is either not working properly or not working at all. The rooms are getting too hot with the thermostat at the lowest level. Come to think of it, it must be working as its slighly cooler that it was before i adjusted it. I havent tried the timer switched on/off yet as we just manually switch it off when it gets too warm and back on again when it gets too cold.

one consideration is you thermostat location. Is it being effected by a cold draft? Or other circumstance that means the area where the stat is, is cooler that the area that is overheating?
Some options out there are wireless stat that are fully programmable (some double as alarm clocks too) so you can place them in the room you want properly controlled

If you have boiler at lowest temperture the surface temperture of the radiators should not go above that.

Have you thought about turning off one rad if there are two in the room?
