CD Drive disappearing

Hi,

Bought a new laptop a few months ago and after installing a number of applications the cd drive disappeared. Looking in the device manager it gives an error code 10?

I eventually found a solution via trusty Google which was to go into the registry settings and delete the upper and lower filters which worked, however not very comfortable with doing this.

Once this was done, cd drive working perfectly but iTunes produces an error something along the lines of 'You will not be able to burn cd's, this may be due to new cd burning software being installed'. The solution to this is to re-install iTunes, however when I do this the cd drive disappears and so on.....

Basically it's not a problem for me not to be able to burn CD's from iTunes, however I would like to stop these error messages from arising. Also with my very limited knowledge of these things I'm worried that there may be something fundamentally wrong with the computer

Has anyone seen this before? Can anyone advise as to what I can do to resolve?

Any help greatly appreciated,

By default, (on a new installation) iTunes appoints a new drive in your "My Computer" area? (This is to enable your ipod to be used as an external hard drive)

This "drive letter" may be clashing with your CD-Drive letter.

a) After you have setup you registry to show the drive, reinstall iTunes (you may not need to as I think you already have(?)) and connect your iPod to the pc.

b) Open iTunes and go to "Devices-->iPod" (basically this means select the iPod from the list on the left).

c) In the main screen look under "Options". - If "Enable disk use" is checked, just uncheck it and go "Apply" (in the lower menu on the right).

This should make the iPod drive disappear from the list in "My Computer".
You may need to restart the pc.

All the above may be different for a Mac.

Let me know how it goes.
