CAT 6 cable

Many posters have said that CAT6 cabling of a house is a great idea.

I am wondering if this is really necessary?

I can set up a wireless network in the house and have no need to cable it for CAT6.

I suppose the questions is this: What will CAT6 cable give me that wireless won't???
 
wireless is perfectly secure if you know how to secure it and reliable also. i have a new house, i work in IT and never dreamed of putting in cat 6 cable. i have an xbox working wirelessly , anything from 1-2 laptops and a normal pc. no problems. wireless is the way forward, especially at home
 
Just in case you happen to be using TV Video senders in the house then wireless can interfere with the signal. My wireless, cordless phones, bluetooth, microwave all interfere with TV signal. I think I need more coax to solve this one.
 

Throw in a baby monitor, DECT phone, a wireless speaker system, multiple neighbours networks all using the same 2.4Ghz band and then try streaming HD Video in real time accross your network. BTW Cat 5 will do fine in a house, no need for 6 or 7 but not harm in them .

This is my driver for CAT 6 in my build, I plan to have a central entertainment system using multiple modded xbox's. Wireless does not have the bandwidth yet and CAT 5 is not worth looking at.
 
wireless is unreliable if you ever plan to use it for for important always on stuff like webcam security.
Wired is much more stable.
Microwaves interfere with wireless.
Wireless still only goes in certain directions and no matter how many newer better ones I've tried its still wont go up two floors.
 
If you're in a position to run cables in a new build/renovation then it's a no-brainer to do so. Bulk cable is not expensive, run twice what you think you'll need. You'll find a use for it.

CAT5e is capable of gigabit ethernet. Given that CAT6-compliant equipment has come down in price so much now you may as well put it in these days, this decision was marginal a couple of years ago. Remember you need to take care on bend radii etc. when running any cables.

The foil-backed insulations in use these days play havoc with wireless signals.

Any if you ever want to stream HD clips/movies etc from a server/Nas - wireless will not do.

Run the cable - and use it to your advantage. It's so much easier setting up connections etc when things are wired.

I can stream full HD movies over a wired network to my TV - and a forum I frequent says that wireless will not transfer that much data.

Why be sorry you didn't put it in - for the sake of a few bob.
