I'm in my mid thirties and currently work at shop floor level. I have recently commenced a M.Sc. Purchasing & Supply Chain Management.

IF for some reason, I don't manage to utilise this by finding a position within my current organisation, what chances are there to find work in this line given that I don't have any track record??
Would be prepared to move any where on the planet for an opportunity if that makes any difference!

If your flexible and got a good qualification, you will get a job. The pay might be poor to start, but it will go up in time.

Manufacturing isn't exactly a growth area, so it might be difficult to break into purhasing elsewhere. I'd say your best bet is to persuade your current employer to give you a shot at a role for 6 or 12 months to get some initial experience.

Manufacturing isn't the only industry that requires buyers. In any case, manufacturing is a growth area, just not in Ireland.

Have you had a chat with your organisation's supply chain/procurement manager to see what they think? Your company, if it's typical, probably has an external recruitment freeze on right now. That could increase your chances of making a move internally.

It's going to be very hard to get an opportunity without relevant experience - especially with the way the economy is going.

What exactly are you doing on the 'shop floor' right now? Are you dealing with suppliers at all? Is there any way you could spin your experience to make it look more like you have experience of vendors? Any chance of a move to the warehouse? That can be a route to supply chain/purchasing that works for some.

Thanks for the replies. Its difficult to get a break within the company - a lot of people chasing down the same few opportunities - but I will be trying to do this nonetheless.

Current job is relevant to a certain degree - involved in control of materials to a certain section of the facility. Use stock control system to reconcile actual with physical stock, flag stock issues affecting production to buyers. Not in the warehouse but work with them in getting stock moved to production. No supplier contact whatsoever - all internal.

A lot of effort going into this so I hope theres something out of it!
