Career change suggestions please

Finishing work next fri (10th Aug). Nothing lined up as of yet. For 10 years i have been a PA at senior level to various Managing Directors.

I would love a career change. I think i`d like to give up office work all together. I dont have any qualifications. Would like something outdoors or Interior Design maybe? I have no idea. Would love to work for myself. I like the idea of lining my own pockets as opposed to lining someone elses!!

Throw a few suggestions at me... anything at all. Be nice though, nothing sinister My friend always says "i`d try anything once, twice if i like it"...

if you've nothing lined up and you need the cash to be flowing in - even just a little why not try something like working for the heritage crowd at one of their historical sites. You'd be out and about and meeting lots on interesting and weird people. Then maybe look at doing a course. Friend of mine did an interior design course few years ago by night. Think it was somewhere in mountjoy square.

Friend of mine started Interior Design from scratch. She did the course at Portobello College in Dublin and was easily able to find work in that industry afterwards. She is very happy with her decision..

What about massage/holistic therapies? Beautician? You can be trained in these areas in under a year and start to make a living immediately!

If you have been PA to MDs then you would have great organisation skills. What about event management? Something in tourism? Working in a hotel setting up conferences etc? How about retail management? What about working for a recruitment company?

good ideas to far.. i think the events management thing is well sown up in Cork. I know of a good few companies in that sector.

Yes, my organisation skills are exceptional. I have a place for everything. Sister thinks im a wee bit Autistic ha!!
 
 
I know what you mean about office work. I'm giving up work next month to do a BA...
You say you like the outdoors - would you consider garden design? You could learn/earn at a nursery or garden centre while you train. I've also seen these courses by correspondence and I think some VECs offer them too. Check out the ads in gardening mags.

where could i apply or find info on "heritage type job" on site in laois/offaly/north tipp area. I don't have any qualifications but i think it would really be my thing..
 
You need to establish your strengths/weaknesses to help you on your way, either by meeting with a counsellor or taking a look at some online sites dedicated to career change, eg
 
If you could work with a career advisor or life coach, this might help you establish some clear direction. I can recommend a really good guy in Waterford (who will travel!) if thats of any use to you at all!
 
A Career Advisor - great idea. Not sure about one in Waterford though.. he`ll probably charge through the nose to travel and im kinda hoping to hang onto every penny i have at the minute...

The more i think about it, i know i definately dont want to be sitting to adesk for 7.5 hrs a day. I need an action job. i`d drive a forklift around a warehouse..

i did their quiz there - very interesting. If someone was to ask me those Q`s they`d call me a moaner !! ah well...

There would more than likely be counsellors at UCC. The secretary there would give you contact details, then you could make a private appt to discuss your situation/options
