I have a year off and looking for ideas for further study/work experience which will complement my career when i return to the classroom, but which might add an extra dimension to my C.V. I can spend the year studying or working in another field besides education. I have twelve years primary teaching experience....

Hi mikeljoe

Would you consider training? corporate / industry specific? Train the trainer? Teaching learners with special needs? Events / corporate hospitality?

A year off will give you great perspective on what you have been doing. Hope you enjoy it.

Surely you must have had some options in mind when you were considering, applying for and receiving your career break?

Do you need to be earning for the year?
Do you have commitments here in Ireland?

Could you volunteer abroad for a year with VSO or similar, or volunteer here?

What sort of study would enhance your career prospects as a teacher? Special needs/I.C.T. etc.

What type of work would you like to be doing in a few years time?
Ideally now is the time to put in place the strategy to do that whether it s formal training or work experience etc or volunteering.
You should speak to a career guidence counsellor or possibly somebody that works in teh area where you would like to work in the future.
The year can be a fantastic opportunity as well as a break from the mundane everyday teaching job if you do the right course/ work etc.

Thanks pat post,
Thats exactly what i had intended for my year, but i'm confused as to what to pursue....

Is the school principal approachable re discussing future options / directions that may be worth pursuing?
Or maybe somebody like a school inspector or other experienced department person that has an idea of future opportunities or areas of interest.
If you could meet the right person they may be only too willing to give advice or "mentoring", the trick is where/ how to meet them.
I don't know enough about the school system to suggest how you go about this but possibly a chat with a senior colleague may help.

Perhaps an apptitude test or similar may help you decide where your interests are?.
Best of luck with it.
